It operates as a complete microwave labstation capable of performing solvent extraction, evaporation, concentration, high-temperature reactions, and many other advanced applications.

The system is built with rugged stainless-steel construction and equipped with pressure-responsive doors, automatic locking mechanisms, and SafeVIEW camera monitoring to ensure maximum operational safety. High-purity PTFE vessels combined with reinforced PEEK components deliver excellent chemical compatibility, while Milestone’s exclusive vent-and-reseal rotor technology guarantees reliable performance and enhanced protection during digestion processes.

Microwave closed-vessel digestion involves high temperatures and pressures in combination with concentrated acids, making maximum system protection essential under all operating conditions. ETHOS is engineered with safety as its top priority. Its rugged stainless-steel construction ensures long-term durability, while the unique pressure-responsive door—mounted on loaded springs—provides an exceptional level of protection.

In the unlikely event of a vessel overpressure release, the reinforced stainless-steel door fully contains the pressure, and the integrated exhaust system safely directs acid fumes to the laboratory ventilation system. The automatic door-locking mechanism prevents the system from being opened until a user-defined safe temperature has been reached. Additionally, the integrated SafeVIEW camera enables continuous real-time monitoring of the cavity, ensuring maximum operational safety and control.

Temperature control is critical in microwave digestion, as it directly impacts both process quality and safety. ETHOS is equipped with easyTEMP, a contactless direct temperature sensor that combines the accuracy of an in-situ probe, measuring the actual temperature of the sample/solution, with the flexibility of infrared monitoring across all vessels. This dual advantage ensures continuous control and perfectly uniform digestion conditions, delivering reproducible results for every sample while avoiding the need for reprocessing.

For unparalleled digestion control
In a digestion process, the temperature controls the sample decomposition and directly affects digestion quality. Milestone pioneered the use of infrared sensors combined with an in-situ temperature sensor. Today, Milestone innovates again by combining all the benefits of in-situ and infrared sensors into the Milestone easyTEMP, a direct contactless temperature sensor.
Temperature control with easyTEMP
The easyTEMP contactless sensor directly controls the temperature of all samples and solutions, providing accurate temperature feedback to ensure complete digestion in all vessels with superior safety. This technology combines the fast and accurate reading of an in-situ temperature sensor with the flexibility of an infrared sensor. The ETHOS UP software provides digestion history traceability and temperature measurement for every sample. Temperature diagrams and profiles are displayed in real-time, and can be saved on the ETHOS UP terminal. In combination with our ‘vent-and-reseal’ vessel technology, these sensors ensure complete and safe digestions without any loss of volatile compounds.
SMART SOFTWARE
To save your time
The ETHOS UP comes with a dedicated touch screen terminal with easyCONTROL software which provides full control of all digestion parameters, complete documentation and improves the overall procedure. Hundreds of applications, including all US EPA methods, are preloaded in the ETHOS UP terminal, virtually eliminating any need for method development. To further simplify the workflow in the lab the ETHOS UP is equipped with a backlit logo that indicates the actual status of the digestion process.
